Just prior to the start of the school year, Brooke came down with a cough which eventually settled into her sinuses. She is finally what I would consider over it, after 26 days. The first couple weeks were the worst, she wasn't eating, only grapes and cheese, so her ketones were a trace without the fat intake she needs. Out of ketosis, coughing, not sleeping well, brought back her eye darting episodes and it felt like what had been a few steps forward resulted in a giant LEAP backward! After a 5-day antibiotic and much patience, she is doing much better. She's back on the diet, her ketones are up, and she's doing great. Today is a field trip to the zoo with school, many of you know how she reacts to the zoo, for those who don't, it can be quite the sensory overload experience! But she insisted she wanted to go, I always give her the option to stay home, so it will be interesting to get the report on how the day went.
Tomorrow morning Brooke goes in for her first of 5 rounds of serial casting. Her heel cords have tightened up again (she had the lengthening surgery done at age 6). Her feet cannot be placed in a 90 degree position, even with some heavy input. What they will do is position her feet, build up the instep of the cast, and position her for a week. We go back, they position her again, a little more aggressively, and she is re-casted for another week, etc. This will go on for likely 5 weeks of casting. I never thought I would agree to this, however, it has gotten much worse over the last 8 months, stretching isn't helping, and her pronation has worsened as well. Her Physical Therapist and Orthopaedic Doctor feel Brooke is a good candidate for the casting and will ultimately improve her walking. I will keep you posted on her progress. Surgery in the future it a possibility, as she grows and becomes heavier
